The Ragin’ 13
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette weightlifting team won eight national championships between 1957 and 1971 – a run that included five in a row – making it one of the most successful programs in the nation. Two former team members, Walter Imahara, a Japanese-American WWII prison camp survivor, and Warren Perrin, a marginalized Cajun, found common ground through their participation on the team amid battles for acceptance and recognition in mainstream American culture. This remarkable story is chronicled in university alum Nicholas Campbell’s documentary film “The Ragin’ 13,”
